Our Mission

At No-Valo Foundation, we are on a mission to break the cycle of poverty — not just with books and workshops, but with something even more basic: food.

We know that you can’t teach a hungry child — and yet, every year in South Africa, thousands of Matric learners from township schools sit in classrooms on empty stomachs, expected to focus, perform, and carry the hopes of their families.

We believe that Grade 12 is not just a school year — it’s a launchpad. For many, it’s their one chance to rewrite their story.

Why Grade 12 Learners? Why Now?

Because they are the ones most likely to break the cycle — if we help them get across the finish line.

Matric is demanding, stressful, and often make-or-break. For township learners, it is compounded by:

  • Food insecurity
  • Overcrowded homes
  • Unemployment at home
  • Daily transport costs
  • Caregiving responsibilities

These learners are not just students. They are firstborns, breadwinners in waiting, and beacons of hope in their communities.

Hunger is a Crisis — Here and Globally

Global Hunger Stats:

  • 733 million people worldwide faced hunger in 2023 — that’s 1 in 11 people globally.
  • Hunger is rising due to conflict, climate change, and inequality.

Hunger in South Africa:

  • 25% of South Africans experience hunger regularly.
  • 1 in 5 children under five are stunted due to malnutrition.
  • South Africa wastes 10 million tons of food per year, while over 20 million people are food insecure.

Our 2030 Goal: Feed 1,000 Family Members, Sustainably

In 2024, we adopted Esokwazi Secondary School in the Sedibeng Municipality and supported:

  • 5 Families (21 family members)
  • 80% Matric pass rate among supported learners
  • 60% female, 40% male
  • Nutrition + psychosocial + academic support

By 2030, we aim to scale this model, reaching 1,000 family members of Grade 12 learners — sustainably, year-round.

SDG-Aligned Impact

This initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

1
SDG 1: No Poverty

Supporting Grade 12 learners from low-income households to finish school and access better opportunities.

2
SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Providing direct food support to vulnerable households.

4
SDG 4: Quality Education

Enabling better performance by removing hunger as a barrier to learning.

10
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

Supporting students from township communities to access the same opportunities as their peers.

Why This Matters — And Why You Should Care

Grade 12 learners are standing at the edge of what’s possible. They’ve made it this far — don’t let hunger hold them back.

“We don’t just feed families. We fuel futures.”

Your contribution won’t be a handout — it’ll be a hand-up for families who are already doing the best they can, with very little.
